Square of Mikhail Kalashnikov opening

On September 25, the official opening of the Square of the legendary arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov took place in the Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University.

The new 25 thousand sq. m. area is equipped with pedestrian and bicycle paths, lawns, heated benches, parking lots for 200 cars, lighting and video surveillance cameras.

The total cost of construction and installation works exceeds 45 million rubles. Most of the costs (29 million rubles) were covered by the Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University. 16.4 million rubles were carried out at the expense of the city budget.

Rector of the Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University Valery Grakhov thanked colleagues, partners and all of the people who were involved in the construction of the Square, ‘It is very pleasing that our graduates designed and built this square. Exactly two years ago, we decided to improve the Square. Despite the difficult conditions, the work was completed on time and, in my opinion, excellently.’

Oleg Bekmemetev, the Head of the City of Izhevsk and honorary graduate of Kalashnikov ISTU, hopes that the new square will become a place of attraction for all the citizens.

‘Another comfortable public space has appeared in our city. I hope it will be popular among students, teachers, and also residents of the city. The new square was built with mutual efforts – the management of ISTU, representatives of business, and the municipality. It has everything – elements of an accessible environment, bike paths, sidewalks, places where you can gather together, as well as new parking lots and lighting,’ the Head of the City of Izhevsk said.

At the opening of the square, the rector of the University handed over the symbolic ‘key’ to the Square to the students of ISTU. The festive programme continued with creative student performances.
